I spent Friday afternoon at the Weiner Dog Races at Emerald Downs. I had some trouble convincing some of my co-workers that dachsunds are in fact very swift little animals when they are well-exercised. Having had one, I know that they can be too fast to catch and the distances they can go at that speed might surprise you. During the heats, a lot of the dachsunds were having trouble with the concept of a race; they might get more involved in wrestling with each other and never make it to the owner on the other side. Two of them got so excited they didn’t know when to stop, and were clear across to the other end of the horsetrack before their owners eventually caught up to them. The winner was last year’s champion King Louis, who was hit by a truck at some point but still managed to make a spectacular comeback.
