Get Rid of Semalt!

Useful public service announcement: Semalt is a worthless Ukrainian spam site that will flood your small website’s statistics with spam visits that will destroy your bounce rate. Since bounce rate does impact your placement in Google search results, this is something you should care about and remove.

I recently went to their website and listed all of the sites I manage in their blocking service. That was a waste of time. They have continued to crawl all of my sites and I’m lucky if they don’t use the information I gave them for some other sinister plot.

If you’re running a WordPress site, this is the helpful solution:

Open your htaccess file at after your #End wordpress add:

SetEnvIfNoCase Via evil-spam-proxy spammer=yes
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer evil-spam-domain.com spammer=yes
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer evil-spam-keyword spammer=yes
SetEnvIfNoCase Via pinappleproxy spammer=yes
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer semalt.com spammer=yes
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer poker spammer=yes

Order allow,deny
Allow from all
Deny from env=spammer

Ex.

#End wordpress

SetEnvIfNoCase Via evil-spam-proxy spammer=yes
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer evil-spam-domain.com spammer=yes
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer evil-spam-keyword spammer=yes
SetEnvIfNoCase Via pinappleproxy spammer=yes
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer semalt.com spammer=yes
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer poker spammer=yes

Order allow,deny
Allow from all
Deny from env=spammer

I never want to see this domain crop up in my statistics again.
