I wrote my first Frozen pitch in the summer of 2014. It took us two years to go from there to a July 2016 solicitation and a lot of hard work was going on behind the scenes.
The journey began at San Diego Con 2012 when my collaborator on the Ape Entertainment Strawberry Shortcake series, Amy Mebberson, introduced me to Aaron Sparrow and James Silvani, now the creative team on Joe Books’ Darkwing Duck series. They were talking about gathering potential talent for future Disney projects when I walked up and interrupted the conversation. They had the bright idea to try me out and I wrote a Gummy Bears story with no expectation of that ever turning into anything.
Joe Books eventually bought the Disney license and we all had a memorable dinner at San Diego 2014. I’ve loved working with Joe Books all the way through and I recommend following them on Twitter because the projects they’ve announced so far are just the beginning. It’s been challenging to bring one of Disney’s most high-profile properties to comics but it’s also been hugely rewarding, especially working with my editor Jen Hale and publisher Deana McFadden.
