King Phillip and his husband, Don Carlos, live a quiet life in the castle where every day ends with the toll of the bells to say, “All is assuredly well. Most assuredly well.” One night the king has a dream that he’s been blessed with a baby princess and follows the Blue Star to find her.

The king’s struggles through forests, creeks, and tunnels to find the child meant for his family echoes the obstacles same-sex couples go through when they decide to raise children. It also reflects the obstacles other couples face who can’t have children of their own. The long fight some friends have gone through to complete the adoption process has a lot in common with bear-wrestling.

Artist Angela F.M. Trotter gives the story an art nouveau adult coloring book quality. The illustrations are framed with hand-drawn borders reminiscent of stained glass windows and pop with saturated color.

The ending is hopeful, and though not every adoption story has a happy ending, All is Assuredly Well is a calming, upbeat fairy-tale.
