When her mother can’t control her frizzy hair, Jeannie Avery Gibbons makes it the star of her active imagination.

Great picture books marry a solid story with appealing illustrations, and in The Frizz both of those elements come together. Jeannie’s daydream extravaganzas explode with color, while at the same time, are logical places to go for a child with a wild mane of hair.

The star of the book is Jeannie’s hair, a tangle of curly brush strokes and contrasting strands that is deceptively uncontrolled. Author Jasmine Fogwell does an expert job of repeating the same event, Jeannie’s morning routine with her frustrated mother, in ways that are just different enough to stay interesting.

My hair, much like Jeannie’s, is coarse and hard to control. I’ve spent my entire life trying to tame it and can see myself both in the daughter with one curl poking out of her pigtails and her exasperated mother. Kids will enjoy finding the pattern in the story.
