A girl who lives by the beach has a houseful of dachshunds. They spend an afternoon dressing in costumes made from found objects on the seashore. When the ocean magically grants the girl’s wish, the dogs find new homes as fanciful dog breeds.

This is the second book I’ve read by author Kizzie Jones and I was delighted by them both. Her love for dachshunds is apparent in both her fiction and her real life, and I always enjoy seeing her dogs on her social media accounts. The concept here is a quirky fairytale origin,  but though getting there is offbeat, it means I get to see pictures of weiner dogs wearing seaweed and stilts.

The pictures are so much fun–I usually say that too much of a cute thing becomes creepy, but the more dachshunds show up in the illustrations, the more I like it. There is a scene with eleven dachshunds that was particularly adorable.

I was very happy to see the glossary. The educational material is thorough and meaty. There’s information here on different kinds of dachshunds and other dog breeds, but there’s also a fascinating section on beach vegetation. Highly recommended.
